She told stories in many public schools, bookstores, including Barnes & Noble, libraries, and churches in Oakland. Her forte was African American stories. She often told comical stories about her childhood years in Arkansas.

Her listeners loved her stories and encouraged her to write a book about those childhood experiences.After relocating to Sugar Land, Texas, in 2005, Leola decided to write her first book based on the life of her mother, Oneda: The Plight of a Single Mom, which was well received.On the Wings of Imagination is her second book in a planned series about the lives of African American families who grew up in Arkansas during the 1930s and 1940s.
